چکیده

State-of-the-art ways for visualizing high-level music concepts are currently a trend in music computing, aiming at bridging the semantic gap between music information retrieval and human knowledge. This work presents the analysis of Brahms’s String Quartet Op.51 No.1 concerning the concept of chromaticism by using the chromatic index (a chroma measure especially designed for calculating chromatic elements within a piece of music with useful diagnostic value) as a metric. The visualization of the chromatic analysis with actual colours exhibits chromatic variations to musicologists and can even be used as a digital signature for music. The suggested computational approach in MIDI and Audio Files reveals specific motives of the quartet that provide interesting chromatic phenomena. A comparative study between the results of analysis on score-based data and the performance data (from an indifferent live performance) brings the diversity of chromatic perception the same music can cause to light. Moreover, Allen Forte’s proposed motives in his study of Brahms’s Op.51 No.1 are examined for chromatic elements. Each one of the four voices is separately analyzed so that its specific role in the piece’s progression will become evident. Additive techniques are used to calculate the overall chromatic indices of the quartet.

An Integrated Music Chromaticism Model

The evolutional course of music through centuries has shown an incremental use of chromatic variations by composers and performers for melodies’ and music sounds’ enrichment. This paper presents an integrated model, which contributes to the calculation of musical chromaticism. The model takes into account both horizontal (melody) and vertical chromaticism (harmony). The proposed perceptually ba...

A Synopsis of Sound - Image Transforms based on the Chromaticism of Music

Numerous algorithms have been proposed for image to sound and sound to image transforms. Based on heuristic assignments of sound frequencies to RGB values, they perform effective mappings between musical entities (notes) and values for optical wavelengths. In this paper, the chromaticism of the sound domain is taken into account and the coloring of the performed music is depicted for interrelat...

A Quantitative Study of Chromaticism: Changes Observed in Historical Eras and Individual Composers

Music historians have observed informally that Western music became increasingly chromatic between roughly 1600 and 1900. This view is tested formally, and the results are shown to be consistent with the standard view. Music historians have similarly assumed that the music of major composers such as Mozart and Beethoven became increasingly chromatic over their respective lifetimes. Measurements...

The Social Implication of Internal Instincts and Hidden Motives in O’Neill’s Mourning Becomes Electra

American playwright, Eugene Gladstone O’Neill (1888-1953) is presenter of truth without comprising his beliefs. His works are dramatized by passion elements such as memories, dreams, and by awareness of forces. During mid-1920s he became interested in dramatizing complicated pattern of his family’s life. Mourning Becomes Electra, which opened on Oct. 26, 1931, and had fourteen acts, was O'Neill...

Effect of Light and Music on Growth Performance and Survival Rate of Goldfish (Carassius auratus)

Environmental enrichment is one of the methods for improving fish growth performance. In the present trial, the effects of both light color and music on growth performance and survival of goldfish (Carassius auratus) (initial mean weight: 4.15±0.08 g) were investigated for 2 months. Two light color treatments (red light and white light) and three music treatments (M0: without music, M30:30 min...
